Abstract
The main purpose of this thesis is to design and construct a seeding drill to be used by
the autonomous agricultural robot constructed by NMBU. The drill is supposed to plant
seeds in a hexagonal pattern, for better utilization of the soil. It is also supposed to plant
directly in untilled soil. The drill needs a lifting mechanism, so that the robot can drive to
the field with lifted drill mechanism.
In the development of the concept we discussed the different parts of the seeding
process, namely picking out each individual seed, planting the seed into the soil and
cover the seed with soil. We came up with several different concepts for the various
parts of the process, and tested them. Under conditions set by the agricultural robot,
agronomic conditions and test results, we took a decision what concepts we would
develop further. We decided to use outside-fed vertical discs to single out each seed,
rotary punch-planters with two oblique discs to plant seeds into the soil and press
wheels to cover the seeds with soil. The singling mechanism limits the robot’s working
speed to 0,6 m/s. We designed a test model of the concept, and tested it. These
preliminary tests showed good results.
To get the most efficient seeding process, we want the robot to change the batteries
while refilling seeds. We made calculations on the capacity and performance of the robot
with drill. We found that a grain tank of 260 liters was appropriate. This equals a grain
weight of 200 kg, which gave a total weight of the drill with full grain tank to be 373 kg.
Under the conditions of hexagonal pattern, with 6 cm between each seed, we got a seed
rate of 12 kg/ha. This seed rate equals half of the normal seed rate in today's agriculture.
At a speed of 0,6 m/s, we get a planting time of 8 hours and operating time of 12 hours.
Then the robot will sow 16 ha per tank, which corresponds to 46 ha per day. The
operating time can be less since the calculations exclude servomotors. Anyway, the
robot has plenty of time to change the battery and refill the grain.
We decided a solution with a module-based drill. It should be easy to add or take off
modules to resize the drill. Each module can be lifted, using a solution with arms, liftingshaft,
worm gear and a motor. This mechanism may also regulate the pressure from the
punch-planters to the ground, in terms of the strength of the soil. Each module will
consist of three punch-planters and three pressure wheels, and we will have two rows of
modules. The modules are coordinated so we can sow in the desired hexagonal pattern.
