The new Public Health Act (2011) sets the public health agenda and highlights focusing on the same as a social task, where both municipalities, counties and the state have responsibility for public health. Factors such as education, employment, housing and condition for growth are extra accentuated in the new law. Today’s society shows that more and more young people drop out of school. In Further education college almost one third of all students in Norway quit school without completing it (Meld. St. No. 19 (2014-2015) p.111). In Sund municipality in Hordaland the school performance is below national average. There are more students dropping out of high school and the well-being in school are lower compared to rest of the country. This negative trend can result in young people having problems adapting to work environment later in life. The concept “Inn på tunet” (IPT), english translation: ”Into the yard” could help to reverse this trend. ”Inn på tunet” is a national priority project, rooted in the government’s action plan (2013- 2017) and is based on agriculture. ”Inn på tunet (IPT) is an adapted and quality assured welfare on farms. The goal is to achieve coping, development and well-being. Activities are linked to farm life and farm related work ” (p. 7). This paper highlights the health perspective in IPTactivities on farms, with an emphasis on offering educational activities for children and youth. The design section is based on a case to exemplify perspectives in the first part. The target group consists of kindergarten children and school students with the need for an alternative training and mastery arena. Some key words for how participation in the yard can promote people’s mental and physical health, coping, learning and quality of life are: contact with nature, contact with animals, gardening and social interaction. An IPT farm provides opportunities for improved quality of life and wellbeing, possibilities to experience strong sence of coherence and furthermore the experience of mastering ”real work”. The paper will focus on the two different development and learning arenas “kindergartens” and “alternative education arena”. It presents criteria for designing the outdoor area in a way that the goals of IPT can be achieved. In the selected area, a rural farm in Sund municipality, the criteria have been implemented by performing a landscape analysis and projecting the farm´s outdoor areas. The result is a comprehensive solution proposal for the farm´s outdoor area, adapted to user needs and site conditions. Important keywords in this relation are: natural play landscape, species richness, functionality, aesthetics, spatial experiences, love for nature and good horticultural and livestock experiences. The solution proposal should demonstrate a good example on IPT design and at the same time provide a good tool for the further development of the farm itself.nb_NO
