Miljøfaktorers betydning for ungdoms opplevelser på gård.
Abstract
underproblemstillinger.
Følgende problemstillinger ble reist;
Hovedproblemstilling;
Underproblemstillinger;
Informantene mente at naturen ga
positiv betydning.
Abstract:
The farm has long been a venue for recreation and activity and there is growing interest in
the farm's effects on human health and wellbeing. The farm offers a variety of activities and
work tasks that bring people in contact with animals and nature.
Youth is a period during which youngsters are affected by both internal and external factors.
How young people master this development phase has great significance for health later in
life, as it is during this time one lays the foundation for health in adult life. It is therefore
important to focus on positive health behavior in adolescence and facilitate health
promotion and preventive measures in order to avoid poor health in the adult population.
More and more young people grow up in cities and fewer will therefore experience the
interaction between human and nature. Nature has also been shown to have a positive
effect on human health and wellness and there is a growing interest in the use of nature
within the field of environmental psychology. Nature's properties to stimulate and promote
the senses could lead to activation of the whole person and thereby strengthen the human
experience, development and learning.
Many people have positive experiences, mentally, physically as well as socially, when in
contact with nature and animals. Active contact with animals makes people stay healthier,
recover faster from diseases and have an overall better lifestyle. Horses have been shown to
have restorative, healing and therapeutic properties, and interaction with horses can
generate mastery experiences, better self-esteem and confidence and improve the living
situation for young people.
This study bases its investigation on a qualitative semi-structured research interview.
Informants were 10 youngsters aged 13 to 16 years, who were already in a doctoral project
in which they would participate in an intervention with horses on a farm for a five month
period. There was prepared an interview guide as a tool for data collection. The survey had a
main question, and three secondary questions.
The following issues were raised;
Main questions:
"What environmental factors seem to be of importance for youngsters who have
participated in a project with horses on the farm?"
Secondary questions;
"What is the significance of the horses and other farm animals for the young people's
experience of being on the farm?"
"What is the impact of the farm being located in natural surroundings?"
"How do young people experience sense impressions on the farm?"
The results showed that environmental factors that we had previously predicted as potential
significant factors, such as work tasks, horses, the other animals, scenery, the farm and
sense impressions, were of importance to the young people's experience of being on the
farm. Unforeseen factors, such as the young people’s fear, desire to learn, caring for animals
and humans on the farm which then constituted the social environment, emerged as
important factors for the full experience. From this we concluded that the external and
internal factors are interrelated and affect one another.
Eight participants said that the horses were one of the most important environmental
factors on the farm. Other animals were also important for most, despite the fact that there
was generally little interaction with them. Seven respondents said that they would be
interested in coming to the farm even if there were no horses there, but under condition
that there were other interesting animals on the farm.
Natural environment proved to be important when riding. The informants were of the
opinion that nature gave greater opportunities and freedom to choose riding roads, and that
the experience of nature itself was positive. Three informants stated that natural
environment could be daunting when riding, as they felt they had less control because there
was a fenced in area. Otherwise, the natural environment was generally described as nice
and calming.
Sensory experiences that gave the greatest impression on the informants were the smells of
the farm. Six of the respondents associate these smells with something positive and nice.
Four respondents did not think the smells of the farm were good, but gave the impression
that this was a natural on a farm and that it was okay. Nature sounds and silence were
appreciated, but traffic sounds was mentioned as a negative. Feelings had an impact in that
they were in physical contact with horses. The aesthetic experience respondents had were
partly connected to how the farm was organized, in terms of procedures. Few people were
concerned about what the farm itself looked like.
