I hvilken grad innfris besøkendes forventninger og opplevelser med fuglekikking? – Et casestudie fra Runde.

Abstract

Formålet med denne oppgaven er å belyse problemstillingen: “I hvilken grad innfris besøkendes forventninger og opplevelser med fuglekikking” på Runde. Utgangspunktet er en økende interesse for turistnæringer som tilbyr naturbaserte opplevelser i særegen natur der fuglekikking er et element. Metoden og forskningsdesignet er en casestudie fra Runde. Oppgavens struktur bygger på en kvalitativ blanding av semi-strukturert dybdeintervju, mental mapping og deltakende observasjon.

Intervjuspørsmålene baserer seg på litteraturgjennomgang med tre modeller, som er

forventningsbekreftelsesmodell av turisttilfredshet, opplevelseslandskapets påvirkning på den enkelte turist, og vurdering av de besøkendes opplevelse opp mot fire opplevelsesdimensjoner. Det var 14 besøkende, der elleve var på guidet tur som inkluderte fuglekikking, og tre var på tur uten guide (“selvstyrt tur”). Intervju ble gjennomført før og etter med mental mapping rett før siste intervjuet.

Resultatene bekreftet at fuglekikking og naturopplevelse var de primære interesseområdene hos de besøkende som kom til Runde og at særlig de som benyttet seg av guide fikk forventningene møtt. Dog var dette betinget av guidegruppens størrelse da det påvirket opplevelsen i både positiv og negativ forstand. Generelt var det å få se fuglene i sitt naturlige habitat viktige faktorer for at forventningene ble møtt.

Mye tyder på at etterspørselen etter naturopplevelser med viltkikking vil øke, og med det, behovet for erfarne guider som har kunnskapen til å formidle bevissthet omkring utsatt natur og sårbare dyrearter. Økt interesse og kunnskap om bevaringen av fugler og andre dyrearter betyr nok at Runde vil bestå som et naturvern og fuglefredningsområde. Naturveiledning på Runde har en viktig oppgave i å bevisstgjøre besøkende om betydningen av å bevare naturen på en bærekraftig måte. Fuglekikking er en opplevelse som bevisstgjør og utdanner besøkende om fuglelivets plass i økosystemet. Samtidig er det viktig å ha en klar oppfatning av den enkelte besøkendes forventninger til besøket på øya og fuglekikkingen for å kunne møte disse på en måte som både bevarer fuglelivet og understøtter turistnæringen.

The purpose of this assignment is to shed light on the research question: "To what extent are visitors' expectations and experiences met by birdwatching" on the island of Runde. The starting point is a growing interest in tourism industries that offer nature-based experiences in distinctive nature where wildlife watching is an element. The method and research design is based on a case study from the island of Runde. The structure of the thesis is a qualitative mix of semi-structured in-depth interviews, mental mapping and participant observation, based on the expectation disconfirmation model of tourist satisfaction, how the adventure landscape affects the individual tourist, and the experiencescape that occurs in the interaction between four realms of experience.

There were 14 visitors, eleven of whom were on a guided tour where birdwatching was expected, and three were on a tour without a guide ("self-guided tour"). Interviews were conducted before and after with the mental mapping just before the last interview.

The results confirmed that birdwatching and nature experiences were the primary areas of interest among the visitors who came to Runde, and that especially those who used a guide had their expectations met. However, this was conditional on the size of the guide group as it affected the experience in both a positive and negative sense. In general, getting to see the birds in their natural habitat were important factors in meeting expectations.

There are many indications that the demand for wildlife experiences will increase, and with it, the need for experienced guides who possess the knowledge to communicate and engage visitors who are likely to have a growing awareness of nature and vulnerable animal species. Increased interest and knowledge about the conservation of birds and other animal species probably means that Runde will remain as a nature conservation and bird sanctuary also in the future. Nature guidance on Runde has an important objective to make visitors aware of the importance of preserving nature in a sustainable way and to illustrate this, among other things, by describing the place of bird life in the ecosystem. Birdwatching is an experience that makes this possible because visitors can get close to the birds in their element. At the same time, it is important that one clearly understands the visitor's expectations for the visit to the island and birdwatching, to meet these in a way that does not harm nature or bird life.
