This master thesis explores the role of the landscape architect in implementing the youth’s wants and needs in an urban plan. What happens when the youth of Moss become part of creating the plan for their own city?
The city plan is made through participation processes as well as physical interventions – both with the aim of strengthening social sustainability for the youth in Moss.
Existing guides and challenges related to youth in local urban development are summarized. The knowledge base frames the testing of participation exercises tailored to youth, and the findings are summarized with physical city analysis of Moss.
In collaboration with Moss municipality, an idea workshop with three high school classes at Malakoff VGS was held. The aim of the workshop was to get input to an ongoing project in the city center. Based on the findings from the workshop, six principles for the development of social meeting places for and by youth are presented.
The input from the youth served as the base in the development of the city plan with an emphasis on designing places where youth can explore, unfold and express themselves. The principles and physical interventions in accordance with the findings from the idea workshop is illustrated through scenario plans for three urban spaces in Moss.
Based on the making of the Youth’s Urban Plan of Moss, the role of the landscape architect in the participation process is explored. The importance of active participation is emphasized, and the results show that a landscape architect can serve as an important spokesperson for the youth in sustainable development and design of future cities.
