Abstract
Rogier Jongeling sin doktoravhandling: ” A process model for work-flow management in
construction” (Jongeling 2006).
produksjonsledere for betong hos entreprenøren. Disse intervjuene beskrev en
planleggingsprosess basert på erfaring med praktiske hjelpemidler. Avdekkete begrensinger
planleggingsmetoder.
sammenlignende vurdering.
Abstract
The methods used in concrete production today give no opportunity to visualize the
production with all its aspects. This challenges the logistics and changes that may occur at the
building site, and calls for new solutions. The solution can be an extended planning using
building information models (BIM) and new theory. These new tools may thus enable the use
of 3-dimensional building models, simulation and new management theory to simplify the
management of concrete production.
This thesis describes practical steps to management of concrete production based on
simulation in a 4D CAD/ 4D micromodel as well as theory from Lean Construction. The work
has been done on request from AF Bygg Oslo, a contractor in Oslo, Norway.
The purpose of this thesis is to expand on the planning process currently in use by AF Bygg
Oslo in order to clarify challenges and needs within the production. In order to achieve this it
was important to identify the theories, needs and methods of current practice. The next step
was to look for new opportunities in terms of alternative theory and methods. The activitybased
planning, serves as an example of today’s practice, and was a natural reference. Then
alternatives like Location-Based management, Lean Construction, risk management and
animation of a building sequence (4D CAD) were considered. Elements from these were then
seen as potential improvements of the current planning process.
The process model discovered by Rogier Jongeling, and described in his PhD ” A process
model for work-flow management in construction”(Jongeling 2006), was of special interest
for this potential improvement. In his thesis all construction planning was divided in a macro
and a micro perspective. The macro management “aims to provide insight in the overall flow
of work”(Jongeling 2006). The micro-management focused on the production through
simulation, control and planning on the building site. Challenges in the field of micromanagement
are the focus of this thesis, seeking to identify areas of potential improvement of
the building process.
A basic distinction between the management theories was discovered. This considered how
the construction tasks were either “pushed” according to the plan or “pulled” out of the plan
by the available resources on the building site. This has significant practical consequence for
planning and production of concrete.
The current process for planning of concrete in AF Bygg Oslo and the need for improvements
was investigated by interviewing concrete production managers at the contractor. These
interviews described a planning process based on experience and with practical tools. The
limitations and challenges of the process, as well as the specific improvement opportunities,
were described in a requirements definition. This definition enabled an evaluation of different
scheduling methods.
A detailed description of the current process was written on the basis of the interviews and a
study of a specific project at AF Bygg Oslo, the apartment building project Grefsenkollveien
16. The walls and floors in this particular project were manufactured using cast in place
concrete. Practical experience and the conducted scheduling process were described.
The first potential improvement of the planning process was based on the concepts of risk
management and simulation of production on the building site. Risk management was
introduced in order to focus on the unexpected aspects of the production. Building
information model (BIM) was used for visualization of the building and a basic for simulation
of the production (4D CAD). In this way, it became a platform for communication and
understanding of the process. This assumedly improved process was attempted on the basis of
the material from Grefsenkollveien 16 project.
The second potential improvement that was discussed was use of elements from recent
theories in the planning process, called the Lean Construction, with a "pull" perspective. This
perspective was considered to make the planning process more flexible and so the production
more optimal. The building information model was used as a platform for the preparation of
the plans. A planning process was proposed and an experiment conducted on the basis of the
material from Grefsenkollveien 16 and theory.
The thesis has shown how potential improvements of the current planning of concrete
production can be made. Performance evaluation and discussion of the two extensions was the
basis for a comparative review. The result is a building information model, with enrichment in
the form of a production simulation, which may provide a good basis for improved
communication and understanding of planning. New theories like Lean Construction may
give the planner further flexibility and optimization of the production.
