This master thesis is a part of the development of Njord B, a floating wind turbine
concept at The University of Life Sciences (UMB). The focus has been on the
development of solutions in connection with a possible imminent Njord pilot. It has been
a shared focus between the possible installation methods for the pilot wind turbine and
the development of a length adjustment system for the mooring lines. The main focus in
the development processes for both parts have been feasibility and to a large extent the
use of existing technology and solutions.
The thesis has evaluated possible installation methods for a Njord B pilot. During the
analysis were, Hywind which is a competing floating wind turbine concept, used as a
reference point in the development process. The analysis has considered the three most
suitable options against each other after an exhaustive research on each of them. The
analysis concluded that towing of fully mounted wind turbine in a vertical position will
be one of the most appropriate solutions. In this way issues regarding onsite lifting and
pivoting will be avoided, but will require a more complex installation process.
Length adjustment system will serve a need for changing mooring line length. On the
basis of a thorough concept development process and concept screening, so-called
strandjacks where regarded as the most favorable solution. Furthermore, the concept
was implemented in Njord and seen in context with other elements of the length
adjustment system. A solution for fixing the length adjustment system in the wind
turbine tower was also developed, and checked with regard on dynamic and static load.
All calculations are performed in accordance with relevant standard work and routines
in offshore design.
An economic analysis of length adjustment system is implemented. The analysis
obtained cost estimates for strandjack and equipment associated with the jack.
Production and commissioning costs are also included as part of the cost analysis.
