Abstract
Urban spaces by the sea can mean a lot. A pier, a large open square or a small idyllic park, places where people gather and perform activities. In this paper the focus will be on urban spaces by the sea, located in the central parts of the city, spaces among the dense urban structures. There will be presented several kinds of urban spaces, in the shape of a park, a roof, a promenade and pier area, a large monumental square and a newly developed area with a mixture of several types of urban spaces, all located next to the sea. The aim of this study is to see how such spaces are used by the city’s inhabitants and visitors, and to find out if this is typical of the waterfront areas, or whether the same applies to squares, parks and other places in the city center. The water as a landscape element will be put into focus. It is checked whether the water has any effect on the users of the urban spaces, and whether it directly affects or is part of the use of the area. The master thesis consists of 4 parts: an introduction part, a theory part, a case study part, and a part with the discussion and conclusion. The theory is based on a literature study, while the case study consists of analysis of the selected areas by the sea in respectively Oslo and Drammen. Through interviews, surveys and observations, the areas are studied with a view to the thesis’ aim and problem for discussion.
The thesis describes the historical development by the sea in the cities, in addition to presenting
some new projects outside the case areas. It will also provide answers to why people are so
fascinated and attracted to water, and how we choose to use it in the urban context. The use and
importance of the content of the urban spaces is analyzed and discussed later.
