Abstract
Our society today is facing different challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss and urbanisation, and the engagement on environmental sustainability is now greater than before. At the same time the importance of social sustainability in the cities is increasing. We therefore see that there is a need to plan urban spaces that will function both as attractive social venues as well as considering the environmental challenges of the future.
In our master thesis we adressed ecosystem services and how landscape architects can form more sustainable urban spaces by using ecosystem services as a basis for design. Ecosystem services are services and goods provided to us by the ecosystems and nature (NOU 2013: 10, p. 9) Both the ecosystem in itself and elements of an ecosystem can provide ecosystem services. To meet the future climate challenges and the need for more sustainable design of cities and communities, he delivery of ecosystem services can be valuable. Today there is a lot of general information on ecosystem services and planning, but the information is not applicable when it comes to design (Magnussen et. al., 2015; Lierop, 2011; Di Marino et. al., 2019). In our opinion there is a need for more knowledge about how the term ecosystem services can be translated and implicated into the design of urban spaces. We also wanted to find out if the approach could contribute to develop more socially and environmentally sustainable urban spaces.
