The conflict in Ukraine has cemented its place in the annals of history as a major geopolitical event, impacting global politics like never before and contributing to the shifting of longtime major powers in the process. This thesis discusses such avenues and delves into the impact it had on another historical rivalry between two Middle-Eastern powerhouses which is Saudi Arabia and Iran. This study is based on a comprehensive literature review, where the thesis analyzes the war's global impact, the complexities in Saudi-Iran relations and the European Union's energy crisis as key factors. The crisis not only sparked reevaluation of energy security policies but whilst writing the thesis a major breakthrough occurred which was the Saudi Arabia and Iran rapprochement led by China. The application of international relations theories further focuses on the emergence of new diplomatic strategies and responses of the involved actors. The use of scholarly works and relevant articles reveal the reshaping of alliances along with new tensions among major powers such as the United States, Russia and China. Perceptions of identity and norm, unity among Western countries and rebranding of Saudi Arabia also play a critical role in evaluating the foreign policies of countries involved. Through realist, constructivist, and liberal lenses, the thesis explores how national interests and ideas contribute to the ongoing tensions. It highlights the fact that it is about time, involved parties look into the importance of remapping their geo-political stances in accordance to such new crises in a hyperconnected world where problems are rampant. This research contributes valuable insights into the evolving relationship between these two powerhouses and offers recommendations for global players for ensuring security and stability in the face of emerging challenges.
