Den sosiale sømmen på Linderud senter - hvordan utforme inkluderende møteplasser i sosialt mangfoldige nabolag

Abstract

Ulikhet er en del av byens vesen, og det kreves et mangfold av ulike typer mennesker for å skape en by (Oslo kommune, 2009). Den amerikanske professoren Emily Talen hevder at sosialt mangfold bidrar til mer sosialt bærekraftige og rettferdige byer og nabolag, og at formgivere kan støtte sosialt mangfoldige steder gjennom blant annet utforming av felles offentlige byrom som oppmuntrer til sosial kontakt (Talen & Lee, 2018). Det er enighet i faglitteraturen og i nasjonale føringer og mål om at en sosial miks er positivt i bymiljøer, og at møteplasser der man kan bygge opp kjennskap til hverandre er noe som bør prioriteres.

I denne masteroppgaven undersøker jeg hvordan man kan skape inkluderende møteplasser rundt Linderud senter som tar hensyn til det sosiale mangfoldet blant beboerne på Linderud. Linderud senter befinner seg i Groruddalen i Oslo kommune. Gjennom litteraturgjennomgang og stedsanalyser har jeg innhentet informasjon om design av møteplasser i sosialt mangfoldige nabolag og det fysiske og sosiale miljøet på og omkring prosjektområdet. Resultatet i oppgaven er et mulighetsstudie der jeg har utformet en sosial søm bestående av møteplasser på Linderud senter. Ved å skape ulike typer møteplasser med et mangfold av aktiviteter og bruk har jeg forsøkt å skape et sted som vil binde befolkningen på Linderud tettere sammen. Det er også gjort tiltak som gjør møteplassene trygge å oppholde seg i, og forbindelsen mellom senteret og nærliggende funksjoner er styrket.

Med mulighetsstudiet i denne oppgaven håper jeg å kunne bidra til økt innsikt i hvordan landskapsarkitekter og planleggere kan utforme inkluderende møteplasser i sosialt mangfoldige miljøer. Oppgaven har også forsøkt å demonstrere at kjøpesentre kan forsterke sin funksjon som sosiale møteplasser i byer og nabolag, og på den måten ta samfunnsansvar og bidra til økt sosial bærekraft i nabolagene og byene de befinner seg i.

Diversity is a part of a city’s being, and to create a city you need different types of people (Kommunal- og moderniseringsdepartementet, 2019). The American professor Emily Talen argues that social diversity contributes to create more socially sustainable and just cities and neighborhoods, and that urban designers can support social diversity through the design of public spaces that encourages social contact (Talen & Lee, 2018). There is consensus both in literature and national goals that a social mix is positive in city environments, and that public spaces where people can build familiarity with each other should be prioritized.

In this master thesis I explore how to design inclusive public spaces around Linderud shopping centre that is sensitive to the social diversity among the citizens of Linderud. Linderud shopping centre is located in Groruddalen in Oslo municipality. I have gathered information on the topic through a literature review, and information about the physical and social environment through site analyses. The result of the thesis is a feasibility study where I have designed a social seam consisting of public spaces at Linderud senter. Through creating different types of public spaces with a diversity of activities and use, I have tried to create a place that will bind the population at Linderud closer together. I have also taken actions to make the public spaces safe, and the connection between Linderud shopping centre and functions close by have been strengthened.

I hope this thesis can contribute to increased insight into how landscape architects and urban planners can design inclusive public spaces in socially diverse environments. In the thesis I have also tried to demonstrate that shopping centres can be reinforced as public spaces in cities and neighborhoods, and in that way take social responsibility and contribute to increased social sustainability in the cities and neighborhoods they are a part of.
