Programming was implemented from the autumn of 2021 in geoscience in upper secondary school, with the goal of equipping students for the future. This was intended to be accomplished by making the competencies in school subjects more subject-specific. In geosciences, programming and modeling were introduced as new digital skills. With this change in curriculum, it is interesting to investigate how the changes are experienced by the geoscience teachers. It is particularly interesting to take a closer look at the opportunities and challenges they expect with the implementation of programming and modeling, and what competencies they believe the students develop through the use of programming. To gain a clearer understanding of how the introduction has taken place and a better insight into the challenges of geoscience teachers, I investigate the research question: "Which attitudes and expectations do geoscience teachers have regarding the use of programming and modeling, in light of the National Curriculums renewal?", with the focus on opportunities, challenges and competence development in geo students. The research question is investigated through semi-structured interviews, with five geoscience teachers from different counties and through an online survey given through a Facebook group for geoscience teachers. The findings show great variation in the attitudes between the geoscience teachers, and they relate to programming differently. Some believe that modern geosciences cannot exist without programming, others believe that programming is not necessary to learn geoscience. The challenge of creating good teaching programs with programming is one of the main challenges in the implementation of programming. Low competence in programming is highlighted by several geoscience teachers as the reason why it is perceived as difficult to include programming. Despite the uncertainty, the geoscience teachers have many ideas and thoughts about which topics in the competence aims will be appropriate to program in. Several of the ideas are related to localities surrounding the school and fieldwork. This may mean that the students' learning exchange of programming in geosciences is geographically linked. The geoscience teachers have a need to understand the purpose with the implementation of new digital skills through didactic theory and professional practice.
