The slime-producing freshwater algae Gonyostomum semen is being observed in more and more lakes in both Norway and the world, and is regarded as an invasive species in most places. The algae is considered a problem because the slime threads it ejects are causing allergic skin reactions on humans and is clogging the filters of water treatment plants. Studies of Gonyostomum shows it is thriving in small waterbodies with low pH and humic water, with lots of vegetation in the catchment, and lab studies indicate it is competitive at increasing concentrations of DOC and water colour. With the trend of increasing DOM and water colours in Norwegian lakes, it has been proposed that observations of and problems with Gonyostomum is only going to increase in the future. Paleolimnological studies of waterbodies with a documented presence of Gonyostomum can further investigate what environmental conditions are more favourable for the growth of Gonyostomum. In this study two sediment cores were extracted from pond Glennetjern in Kråkstad in the Nordre Follo municipality. The sediment cores were split into 1 cm thick slides in the field, and later freeze dried in the lab. One core was used to calculate dry bulk density and was then sent to University College London to be dated using radiometric dating of 210Pb. They also calculated the sedimentation rate. The other core was used to analyse the content of pigments and nutrients. Subsequently the statistical analyses principal component analysis (PCA) and Spearman’s rank-order correlation analysis were run. According to the radiometric dating the sediments go as far back as 1807. The pigment analysis show a presence of heteroxanthin through the whole core, which means Gonyostomum had been present in Glennetjern for at least 200 years and contradicts the theory that Gonyostomum is a newly invasive species in Norway. The amount of heteroxanthin varies through the core, which indicates changes in the conditions driving the growth of Gonyostomum through time, and the relationship between heteroxanthin and total chlorophyll-a is increasing through the core which indicates that Gonyostomum is becoming an increasingly important part of the total biomass with time. The principal component analysis shows a correlation between chlorophyll-a and heteroxanthin, which supports the idea that Gonyostomum is an integral part of the total biomass. The pigments show increased values in the 1950’s, from the end of the 1970’s until the 1990’s, and a weak but steady increase from the early 90’s until today. Nitrogen, carbon and sulphur have similar trends to the pigments. According to the PCA and the Spearman’s analysis the nutrients are correlated, which indicates a common source, and the content of nitrogen and sulphur in the sediments are more affected by the production in the lake than the input of fertilizers or acid deposition. The increase in values in the parameters around the 1950’s is attributed to the intensification in agriculture that happened after the second world war, that consequently led to an increase in erosion from the catchment and favourable conditions for the growth of Gonyostomum. The increase in values between the 1970’s and 1990’s show no clear cause, as there were a lot of changes in several drivers happening at the same time. The PCA and Spearman’s analysis show a correlation between pigments and annual precipitation, indicating that an increase in precipitation increases the input of organic matter and nutrients which is favourable for algal growth. This might have assisted in the slight increase of pigments from the 1990’s until today. It is concluded that the algae Gonyostomum have existed in pond Glennetjern for a very long time, and that there have been periods through time that have seen more and less favourable conditions for the growth of the algae. A lot of changes have happened in the catchment, both regional changes in climate and in local human activities, and a lot of the changes have happened at the same time. With the lack of historical data about the watercolour or amount of DOM in the water, it has proven difficult to verify exactly what has led to the change in the amount of Gonyostomum in Glennetjern.en_US
