This master’s thesis deals with the development of a comprehensive grass transportation solution for the autonomous agricultural robot Thorvald.
Thorvald is a modular lightweight robot developed at NMBU. The master’s thesis is written in connection with the GrassRobotics research project, which studies how lightweight agricultural equipment and several harvests affects soil compaction, root development and nutrient uptake, as well as development and testing of seed mixtures which are meant for several harvests per season.
The grass transportation solution should have the ability to carry out loading, transportation and unloading, as well as being developed with regards to autonomy.
To reach a prototype, Pughs’ matrix and integrated product development was used, as well as the software Solidworks for CAD, and Ansys Workbench for conducting static strength computations.
The prototype consists of a pickup, a loading conveyorbelt, a transportation box, and floor chains, plus electric motors and ultrasonic sensors. The prototype has a weight of approximately 235 kg and has a payload of approximately 165 kg.
The prototype was developed such that Thorvald can unload itself, and it was developed mounting brackets so that Thorvald can connect to the equipment autonomously.
