To forsøksfelt ble etablert på to markberedte hogstflater ca. 700m.o.h. sentralt i Sør-Norge.
Norway is situated in the boreal forest where Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the dominant tree species and counts for almost 50% of the Norwegian forest. Through law, Norway has arranged for a sustainable utilization of the forest as a resource. Forest owners is for example imposed to establish new forests after logging, there is also incentives which contributes to an increased establishment success and growth in seedlings. As a moisture-demanding species with shallow roots, the spruce is particularly exposed to drought-induced stress. Even tough Norway is expected to receive increased amounts of precipitation in a changing climate, there is also expected to be increased periods of drought during the summer. This may cause challenges for spruce and the Norwegian forestry. Treatments which can improve the establishment of spruce seedlings and their resilience against stress in a changing climate is therefore of interest for the forestry. Early establishment of roots is an important factor in growth and robustness against stress in planted spruce seedlings. Extract from the brown alga (Ascophyllum nodosum) has through previous studies showed an increased root growth in conifer seedlings. Treatments using silicon has shown an increased resilience towards biotic and abiotic stress, and conifers have had an increased root growth during drought-induced stress. The aim of this master thesis was to investigate the effect of extract from brown alga (Acadian) alone or in combination with silicon (Silicapower) on norway spruce root growth, nutrient uptake and vitality during the first growing season after planting. Experimental fields was established on two ground prepared felling sites at about 700m.a.s. in the central south Norway. A total of 356 spruce seedlings from a spruce nursery was divided in three groups. Before being planted, one group was treated with a solution consisting of Acadian, one group was treated with a solution consisting of Acadian and Silicapower and one group was treated with water, acting as a control group. Each plant was visually checked for vitality every four weeks after planting up to the end of the study in October. For a selected portion of the planted seedlings, the needles of the seedlings were collected to measure the concentration of nitrogen and carbon. Older needles were collected right after planting in June and current year needles was collected at the end of the study in October. A selected portion of the planted seedlings was collected at the end of the field experiment in October to measure the root length in different diameterclasses. Plants treated with Acadian alone showed a significant increased root length in fine and medium-sized diameterclasses compared with the control group. However, treatment using Acadian in combination with Silicapower showed no difference in root length compared with the control. Nitrogen, carbon and C:N-relationhips was not different between treatments at the end of the field experiment. Acadian in combination with Silicapower showed a reduced vitality in treated plants at the end of the field experiment compared with control and plants treated with Acadian alone. The factor contributing for mortality and a reduced vitality in seedlings was concluded to be abiotic stress.en_US
