man forstår helsebegrepet.
makt og kontroll over helsen.
oppstå sosial ulikhet i helse.
Background: The current definition of health is not static, but normative for how to understand
the issue of health and our perception of it. The current definition reveals both individual and
social guidelines regarding how to interpret and act in order to achieve good health. There are
several approaches in order to understand the concept of health. Preventive work as well as
promotional work is relevant in the science of public health. The preventive work shall prevent
illnesses/diseases, injury and early death, while the promotional work relates to how we can
promote and improve people’s health and how we can contribute in order to forward positive
resources in their everyday life. There are both social, environmental as well cultural elements
relevant for the development of good or bad health. In the promotional work the individuals’
interaction and participation is an important factor. The thoughts behind the promotional work is
the idea that the individual as well as the local society should be in control of health. Despite the
fact that the authorities are emphasizing the interaction of the individuals, there are little
knowledge today of how children and young people are able to perceive the concept of health.
Purpose: The purpose of this study for me has been a deepening in children’s understanding of
the concept of health. The issue of the study is: How does a selection of children consider the
concept of health and which factors do they consider essential and important for good or bad
health. The study is meant to be a contribution in order to reveal the children‘s rights and their
own possibility of making definitions regarding this concept. In addition, I think the study may
be valuable for communication. Communication demands insight in each other’s thoughts,
imaginations, perceptions and values, which are important elements in health promotional work.
Method: The approach of the study is grounded on a qualitative method based on
phenomenologic- hermeneutic design. Individual interviews derived from a structural interview
guide was performed amongst children aging between 11 and 13 years - whereof 4 of them were
boys. The material was transcribed and analyzed using systematic text condensation.
Results: The result of the study reveals the conclusion that children’s conception of health is
strongly influenced by the society they are part of. The main result regarding promotional health was that the children considered the life style issues - such as healthy diet and sufficient exercise
were the most important factors in order to obtain good health. During the interviews, the
children in addition made their reflections concluding that there were several other factors,
which contributed to the development of good health. They emphasized the importance of good
family relations and close friends as essential elements to achieve good mental health. They also
found it important to have a good picture of yourself as person, in order to be happy and selfconfident.
The children considered environmental factors such as the opportunity to have access
to nature and outdoor life important. Social factors implying school, commercials as well as
politics, also affected their health.
Conclusion: It may appear that social information of health and health campaigns emphasize too
much on risks, protection and renunciation in order to promote good health. Emphasizing too
much on these issues may contribute to developing “a society of risks”, in which one focuses
more on the risky sides - and less on the bright sides. Children easily adapt the mainstream
knowledge in society. They might get inadequate understanding of what creates health if society
focuses too much on the physical side of health. These children will be exposed to developing
bad conscience for what they do not master, and that can easily result in social imbalance. In
future health campaigns, one should also focus on factors such as the sources of health being
factors regarding issues beyond the physical part. This one can concentrate on developing the
understanding that health encompasses more than a “perfect body” or “correct life style».
Children need to experience that health is a mixed account, with a need for acceptance of the
imperfect. Accordingly, one might contribute to promote the children’s self-confidence,
optimism and strengthen their general ability to endure. Thereby we will have a more generous
society
