En undersøkelse av et autorisert nasjonalparksenter sin virkning på besøkendes forståelse, holdninger og intensjoner knyttet til norske naturverdier, miljø- og forvaltningsutfordringer

Abstract

Naturveiledning er formidling av følelse for og kunnskap om naturen. Naturveiledning kan være et effektivt verktøy for å ha en positiv effekt på personer sine holdninger og atferd knyttet til natur og miljø. Dette studiet har hatt som formål å undersøke om naturveiledning i form av et autorisert besøkssenter, Hardangervidda Nasjonalparksenter, er vellykket i formidling av naturverdier, miljø- og forvaltningsutfordringer knyttet til den tilhørende nasjonalparken til sine besøkende. For å undersøke dette ønsket studiet å utforske hvilke effekter senteret hadde på besøkendes forståelse, holdninger og intensjoner, og om disse var forskjellig i sammenligning med den generelle befolkningen. Forståelse, holdning og intensjon var undersøkt for formidlingstema knyttet til senterets innhold og budskap om Hardangervidda, og spesielt om villrein (Rangifer tarandus). Innsamling av data foregikk gjennom spørreundersøkelse med en multidimensjonal tilnærming til måling av holdning og intensjon, og gjennom intervju ved bruk av «thought-listing» teknikken. Studiet fant at besøkssenteret var delvis vellykket i formidling av naturverdier, miljø- og forvaltningsutfordringer i Norge. Senteret gav positiv effekt på personers forståelse, holdninger og intensjoner, men disse var begrenset til spesifikke, lokale miljøtema knyttet til Hardangervidda nasjonalpark og villrein, og mindre til generelle miljørelaterte holdninger og intensjoner i en bredere kontekst. Studiet gir grunnlag til å argumentere for videre nasjonal satsing av besøkssentre gjennom miljøforvaltningens autorisasjonsordning og til naturveiledning i Norge ellers.

Environmental interpretation can be defined as thematic communication of feelings and knowledge about nature. Environmental interpretation can be used as an effective tool to positively influence people’s environmental attitudes and behaviours. The purpose of this study was to examine the success of environmental interpretation in the form of an authorised visitor centre, the Hardangervidda National Park Centre, in promoting visitor understanding and attitudes relating to Norwegian environmental heritage, environmental challenges, and nature conservation and management work. To examine this, the study compared visitor understanding, attitudes and intentions related to the centre’s content and messages about the Hardangervidda, and especially wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), to those of the general public. Data was collected though surveys, using a multidimensional approach for measurement of attitude and intentions, and through interviews using the “thought-listing” technique. This study finds that the visitor centre was partially successful in communication of Norwegian environmental heritage, and environmental and conservation challenges. The centre had a positive effect on people’s understanding, attitudes, and intentions, but these were limited to specific, local environmental issues related to the Hardangervidda National Park and wild reindeer, and less to general environmental attitudes and intentions in a broader context. The study provides a basis for arguing for the continued development of and investment in authorised visitor centres in Norway.
