Sirkulær materialbruk i landskapsarkitektur

Abstract

Dagens samfunn er preget av en lineær økonomi med en tydelig ‘bruk og kast-mentalitet’. I takt med en økende befolknings- og velstandsvekst, overskrider vi jordas kapasitet og utarmer dens ressurser. Dette truer jordas regenerative systemer, og vi er nødt til å endre vanene våre for at kloden skal kunne gjenfinne sin balanse, samt bevare tilgangen til verdifulle ressurser også for framtidige generasjoner. For å unngå materialutvinning, og heller optimalisere utnyttelsen av materialer som allerede er utvunnet, bør utviklingen gå i retning av en sirkulær økonomi.

Sirkulær materialbruk er i ferd med å bli et viktig fokusområde i bygg- og anleggsnæringen, som med høyt materialforbruk og store avfallsmengder har stort potensiale for å utnytte verdien i ressursene bedre. I landskapsarkitektur blir sirkulær materialbruk et ekstra aspekt som skal balanseres opp mot andre sosiale, estetiske og miljømessige hensyn, og som dermed kan gjøre designprosessen mer kompleks.

Oppgaven undersøker hvordan sirkulærøkonomiske vurderinger, med fokus på materialbruk, kan implementeres i en designprosess på byggeplannivå for landskapsarkitektur. I tillegg legges det vekt på hvordan en slik designprosess kan arte seg annerledes enn en mer konvensjonell designprosess. Dette undersøkes på bakgrunn av litteratur- og dokumentsøk, dybdeintervjuer, samt metoden ‘research through design’, hvor spørsmålene utforskes gjennom aktivt å arbeide i iterative prosesser.

Resultatet er et forslag til implementering av sirkulær materialbruk i en designprosess på byggeplannivå, der et parallelt nivå for gjenbrukssøk og gjenbruksdesign blir lagt til.

At present, our society is dominated by a linear economy, characterized by a “take-make-waste” mentality. In correlation with a rapid growth in population and human prosperity on a global level, we are now exceeding the earth’s ecological capacity by impoverishing the world’s resources. This trend is threatening the earth’s regenerative systems, and for that reason we must change our way of living in turn for the earth to restore its balance, while at the same time preserving valuable resources for future generations. To avoid further material extraction, and rather optimise the utilisation of already recovered materials, we should aim at developing a circular economy. For the construction industry, circular use of materials is about to become a focal point, as the consumption of materials is high, and large amounts of materials goes to waste. Consequently, there is a great potential for making better use of valuable resources. Implementing circular use of materials in landscape architecture can be a complicated task, as it must be considered in relation to other interests, such as social, aesthetic, and environmental values, which also plays a part in the design process. This master’s thesis investigates how circular economic assessments, based on material use, can be implemented in a design process at a construction level in landscape architecture. Supported by relevant literature, interviews of depth and a ‘research through design’ method, this thesis puts emphasis on how such a design process can transpire, and how it might differ from a more conventional process. The result is a suggestion on how to implement circular use of materials in a design process at construction level, where a new stage of mapping and design for reuse are added.
