This master's thesis is based on physics-related textbook tasks and how these facilitate the student's competence development in critical thinking. My own experiences through practice and work in upper secondary school, as well as didactic literature, emphasizes and points to the significant role of textbooks and textbook tasks in teaching, for both students and teachers. The research question is "To what extent can textbook tasks, in science education, contribute to students’ competence development in critical thinking?". To investigate the research question, I have used the method qualitative content analysis and analyzed 722 textbook tasks in the three Norwegian textbooks Naturfag SF, Senit SF and Kosmos SF. The textbook tasks have been selected, based on physics-related competence goals in the science curriculum. In the analysis, the empirical material is processed to map which cognitive processes the textbook tasks facilitate. I use literature about different cognitive processes and connect them to what the students must do to solve the different types of tasks in the textbooks. The analysis describes the cognitive processes by the categories: reproduce, explain, apply, analyze, evaluate and create. For example, should the student reproduce a concept, analyze a system, evaluate a problem or plan an exploration? The different cognitive processes are given different values, from low to high complexity, based on Krathwohl's taxonomy. The aim of this analysis is to get a percentage overview of the textbook tasks, categorized according to the type of cognitive process that the students should apply. The findings in the analysis provides an overview of the distribution of cognitive processes among the textbook tasks. This forms the basis for the discussion and answering of the research question. The findings show a great lack of tasks that facilitate the use of complex cognitive processes in students. Competence development in critical thinking is associated with the application of complex cognitive processes. The textbook assignments therefore do little to facilitate the student's competence development in critical thinking. On the other hand, textbook assignments are only one of several parts of the textbooks, and a more comprehensive analysis could give other results. For further research, I encourage researchers to analyze several elements in the textbook.en_US
