| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | In the last few years, there have been an increased focus on the consequences of extreme weather. A combination of frequent and aggressive precipitation events and an increase in urbanization may lead to large quantities of surface runoff, which can cause major and expensive damage to infrastructure. In the hope of increasing the students’ knowledge of fundamental concepts regarding rainfall and runoff, this study will describe the development and production of a rainfall-runoff simulator. The simulator will be able to demonstrate different kinds of rainfall events and their corresponding runoff.
The simulator has a catchment area of 2 sqm. A pump will supply the desired rainfall intensity to a distribution system that distributes the rain uniformly over the catchment area. The catchment area can represent different kinds of surfaces, where three different surfaces are presented in this study. It is also possible to variate the surface slope on the catchment area. The runoff from the catchment area is weighed and logged, so that the runoff curve for different kinds of rainfall events can be generated.
The simulator demonstrates that the generation of runoff is strongly affected by both the rainfall event and the characteristics of the catchment area. By further development of the simulator, processes connected to infiltration and erosion may also be demonstrated. The simulator can be used for educational purposes within NMBU, as a more practical and visual alternative for students. Hopefully the simulator will contribute to enhance the understanding of the relationship between rainfall and runoff processes. | en_US |
