After opening their new viewpoint “Utsikten” on the National scenic route at Gaularfjellet, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) saw an increase in traffic along the route and therefore wanted to conduct a survey among its users. The use of the Fossestien trail, a 21 kilometres long hiking trail that runs along the Gaular river and parallel to the scenic route, was of special interest. In the summer of 2018 there was conducted a user survey along the Fossestien trail in the Sogn og Fjordane county in Western Norway. The purpose of the survey was to find out more about its users, as well as their satisfaction with current facilities and attitude towards new facilitation. The methods that were used were self-registration-boxes, interviews and statistical analysis. In total 769 registration forms were collected from the two registration-boxes and ten interviews were conducted. In order to identify user groups and analyse their mean scores, one-way ANOVA and chi-square were used. In order to see which factors influenced the attitude towards potentially new facilitation among the respondents, multiple regression analysis was used. The average hiker along the Fossestien trail in the summer of 2018 was part of a non-Norwegian couple around 45 years old, who were visiting the area for the first time on a private trip. Their hike along the Fossestien trail was a short daytrip that lasted around three hours and the main purpose was to watch the nature and landscape surrounding the trail. They were very happy with the facilities along the trail, but still wish there were more information- and viewpoints, as well as more detailed signage along the trail. They found information about the Fossestien trail on either the internet, social media, maps or the tourist information, and one out of two had planned their visit to the national scenic route over Gaularfjellet and the Fossestien trail in advance. Results from the survey indicate that the management in the area need to offer their guests both facilitated and untouched areas in order to satisfy their different needs. The group that was most satisfied with both current as well as new facilitation were Norwegian visitors. Foreign respondents, especially Dutch and German, displayed the least positive attitude towards new facilitation. Age had the biggest effect on the attitude towards facilitation and younger respondents were the most positive towards new facilitation. Among the potential, new facilitation options the respondents were most positive towards the simpler versions, such as information- and viewpoints. The more prominent options, such as camp sites, toilets and dining areas were the least wanted.nb_NO
