The courtyard is an increasingly common architectural approach to healthcare institutions. For closed psychiatric wards, it may be advantageous for the architecture to form a confined space that makes the use of fences unnecessary. The room is isolated from the surroundings and often has a limited area, which makes great demands on the design of the courtyard. This project is a study of what is important in the design of a courtyard for forensic psychiatry at the new hospital in Drammen. I have formulated two goals to answer to the issue. The first goal is to find out what a health-promoting environment entails for the user group and formulate a basis for design. The basis consists of findings from information about the place and the user group, empirical data from visiting other courtyards at institutions for psychiatry and literature review. Background information and knowledge include various institutions for psychiatry. Therefore, the basis has value to other similar projects. A toolbox of 13 elements to designing health promoting environments is the result of the basis for design. During the project, it is stated that the balance between the amount of plants and space as well as open and sheltered spaces is important to consider in the design. The lack of legislation on outdoor areas when building in the health sector is mentioned as a problem in the theoretical part of the project. Research argues why projects on courtyards in psychiatry should be given more attention and greater economic resources than what is the current situation. The other aim of the project is to present the design of a health-promoting environment in a courtyard at the forensic psychiatry department at the new hospital in Drammen. The toolbox and balance between plants and space as well as open and closed spaces are the base for the design. The design of a health-promoting courtyard requires an assessment of which factors are of greatest importance to the users, since the available space is limited. Aspects that have been important for designing the courtyard include visual calm, activity, opportunity for shielding and overview and for changing the environment that gives a sense of control and mastery.nb_NO
