Within materials science, there are many materials and disciplines one can immerse oneself in. Materials such as iron, steel, aluminum, copper and glass are materials that have been in use for a long time. Iron, steel, copper and glass were discovered and have been used for thousands of years before our era, while aluminum is a relatively new material that was discovered in the nineteenth century. Regarding plastic materials and synthetic polymers, this is a relatively new field in materials science. Plastics were not discovered until the late nineteenth century and had a significant development in the twentieth century. Since plastics are newly discovered and new materials in relation to the history of materials, it will cause the field of research and study of plastic materials to not have come as far in relation to older materials such as steel and iron. Therefore, the study and research on plastics and polymers are an important area of specialization, both now and for the future. A field that lacks research is the study of how the properties of plastic materials is changing at very low temperatures. The objective of the assignment was to find information about the most widely used thermoplastics in the world, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride in addition to reinforced thermosetting plastics, and find methods to test these plastic materials at low temperatures. The selected solution method was to model 3D models of real pipes and test specimens in the CAD program SolidWorks, and then run simulations where the pipes and test specimens were exposed to different forces, pressures and low temperature ranges. In addition, tensile tests have been carried out on materials such as polyethylene and fiberglass at the tensile testing laboratory at Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus. The results of the simulations and the tests have been compared with the investigated theory of plastic materials at low temperatures and the conclusion was that the theory coincided with the simulations and the tests. Generally, it is seen that a lower temperature leads to an increase in the modulus of elasticity of the plastic material, so that it is both harder and stiffer. The consequence of a harder and stiffer plastic material is that the strain in the material is reduced. In addition, the plastic material becomes more brittle and it becomes more susceptible to potential crack growth that can easily cause failure and fracture of the material. In addition to theory, experiments and simulations it is also conducted a study of the plastics industry, the petrochemical industry, external factors affecting the plastics industry, the analysis of price trends for various plastic materials and a prognostication for the further development of plastic materials and the plastics industry.nb_NO
