Er det russiske aksjemarkedet effisient? : en test av svak form for markedseffisiens i perioden 2005 - 2015
Abstract
This thesis contains a study of the Russian stock market during the period 2005 – 2015. The
aim of this study is to investigate the assumption that the Russian stock market is
informationally efficient in a given period. In the thesis, daily, weekly and monthly data has
been studied for four different periods: for the whole period and three sub-periods (2005 -
2007, 2008 - 2010 and 2011 - 2015). Data collected in this study is based on eleven Russian
stock indexes: MICEX, RTS, RTS-2, Blue Chips and seven MICEX sector indexes. For a
more thorough analysis, stock prices from S&P500 and the Brent oil price have been used in
some models.
In order to be able to answer the issue at hand, the data was examined with the help of various
econometric models: Runs test, autoregressive, lead lag and VAR models. In addition, an
examination was made to prove the presence of calendar anomalies. The analysis section of
this thesis concludes with a discussion on how exogenous shocks in one particular stock index
can affect one or more Russian stock indexes. Software programs EViews 9 SV and Excel
2010 were used to carry out the analysis.
Runs test revealed autocorrelation between historic returns for several Russian stock indexes
with the exception of Blue Chips and MICEX – sector index Oil and gas. The results from
autoregressive models confirmed that historic daily, weekly and monthly returns can be used
to predict future returns. Only the period 2005 - 2007 showed no significant estimates on the
basis of weekly data. In addition, it was found that the MICEX sector index Bank and Finance
was the only one that showed no sign of a serial correlation in weekly returns for all periods.
The results from the lead-lag model indicated that there exists a correlation between returns in
own stock indexes during different periods. Indexes were split into two groups: leading
Russian stock indexes together with S&P500 and Brent oil price, and sector indexes. The
absence of serial correlation was detected in weekly and monthly returns in the first group for
different periods. There was no serial correlation registered for weekly returns for branch
indexes during 2011 - 2015. S&P500 returns from the previous day are significant for current
day returns for all the leading indexes during all periods. On the other hand historic returns on
the oil price have no influence on current returns in the first group of indexes during all
periods. As regards the sector indexes, historic returns on Electric power, Telecommunication and Machine building sector indexes have most influence on current daily, weekly and
monthly returns for their sector indexes in all periods.
The testing of calendar anomalies was undertaken using both day of the week effects and
month of the year effects for different periods. Very few significant estimates were proven for
the test using day of the week effects. The null hypothesis is retained for all Russian stock
indexes for the period 2008 - 2010 and 2011 – 2015, and also for period 2005 - 2015 with the
exception of MICEX - Machine building. Month of the year effects are more pronounced
than day of the week effects in the Russian stock market. The null hypothesis is rejected based
on the results of the analysis of the month of the year effects for all periods except 2008 -
2010.
Results from the VAR-model revealed that historic stock index returns have an influence on
current stock index returns both as regards their own indexes and other Russian stock
indexes.
It was also found that exogenous shocks which occur within a particular stock index primarily
affect returns within that stock index itself.
The findings which were made in this thesis indicate that the Russian stock market is not
informationally efficient in the years 2005-2015.
