byggebransjen.
Polish guest workers constitute the largest group of immigrants in Norway, they often work in
low status and low salary jobs, with hard working conditions, which places them at risk of
poor health, which forms the background and focus for this thesis. The importance of
migration from Poland to Norway is not adequately reflected in the research literature, and is
claimed to be deficient and fragmented.
The purpose of the thesis is to illuminate the health challenges the Polish guest workers are
experiencing while living in Norway, and that this knowledge can form a foundation for
strengthening health promoting efforts including interventions and policies in order to
improve their health status, and also be a base for further research.
The study uses a phenomenological approach and uses qualitative methods to get an
understanding of social phenomenon from the informant’s perspectives. Five semi structural
in-depth interviews have been conducted with Polish guest workers aged 30-48 years. All of
the informants are in Norway temporarily and work within construction. In order to analyse
the interviews, systematic text condensation inspired by Giorgi, modified by Malterud, has
been used.
The findings show that the most salient themes that emerged in relation to their health, view
of health, health behaviour and access to health care services were their transnational lifestyle,
their temporarily stay, that work was of higher importance than health, and that economy was
an important factor in terms of their health and their choices related to health.
The Polish guest workers tend to have a lower socioeconomic status than Norwegians, they
are often in survival mode and they make different choices concerning their health, than what
they would in Poland. A lifestyle characterized by distance to family, and insecurity and
expectations at work, which are described as stressful, can take a toll on the guest workers
over time. Their view of health is characterized by a short-term approach, and the temporality
is additionally strengthening this short-term approach, that in sum poses a health challenge for
the Polish guest workers.
