ABSTRACT The main goal of this project is to develop an aluminium cooling column with adjustable stand, for use in the laboratory for machine- and vehicle dynamics at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The purpose of the cooling column is to regulate the coolant temperature of combustion engines up to 130 kW during dynamometer testing. The stand is to be adjustable up to one meter above ground level. The project was started with a literature study of the cooling systems of combustion engines, to facilitate choosing the functional requirements and determining the product specifications. By using the given specifications, the concepts have undergone a screening process to help choose the most suitable concept for the cooling column and the stand. The cooling column is based on a reservoir with a thermostat and a float valve, and the stand is a framed construction adjusted by a trolley and a hand winch. Thermodynamic and structural calculations were conducted for the cooling column and its main components to determine the required cold-water flow and the main dimensions. The heat loss during use was also determined, concluding that the total heat loss is without significance for the cooling effect. The main components of the stand and important joints were statically controlled using the design load for all calculations. The main dimensions of the stand were determined using the necessary adjustment range and the tipping moment of the construction. FEM analyses for the main components and assemblies of the cooling column and the stand were conducted to verify hand calculations, and to facilitate design optimization. The cooling column is cylindrical with an outer diameter of 260 mm, and a height of 800 mm. It is constructed from 6060-T6 aluminium. It is designed for a fluid volume of 30 litres, and has connections for 2 ½” hose barbs with outside BSP-thread. The necessary water supply is determined to be 0,7 litres per second. The thermostat opens at 71 °C, and the temperature stabilizes at 75 °C during full power. The stand consists of UNP50-profiles and 50 x 30 mm rectangular hollow sections, and uses construction steel with quality S235JRG2. Total height is about 1,6 metres, and the total width is 0,8 metres. The foot of the stand has a length of 0,76 metres. The trolley is based on square steel profiles with slide blocks, and is adjusted by a hand winch using a 3 mm steel wire. The system is designed as compact as possible in accordance with the given specifications, and has the least amount of connections possible. The cooling column allows for different engine sizes, and the stand is designed to allow compact storage whenever the system is not in use. The cooling column is developed to be compatible with the worst-case scenario for a combustion engines efficiency, which resulted in an estimated 200 kW of heat from an engine with 130 kW of power. The stand is developed to handle the load from the cooling column and the trolley with a safety factor of 4 against failure. The design load was estimated to be 240 kg. The estimated total cost of a prototype is determined to be in excess of 50 000 NOK without taking the development costs into consideration.no_NO
