Abstract This thesis describes a pre-sale to the calculations and design of a 20 ton lift basket for offshore operations, primarily for the lifting of steel profiles by decomposition of the oil platforms. The idea for the thesis comes from associate university professor Geir Terjesen. The department of Mathematical Sciences and Technology, IMT, was interested in knowing the existing in these kinds of constructions, and which regulations apply. This project started up by studying different kinds of standards that include this thesis. It was also a meeting with Øistein Riber from Datek AS, who has extensive experience with lifting equipment. The dimensioning started up pretty early due to the importance of the thesis. It would prove to take more time than initially anticipated. The primary structure was at first calculated in Ansys Classic by using commands in the input file. Using this method makes it easy to change the frames structure, beam size and so on. FEM analyzing of different frame structure and beam dimension has been consistent to optimize the function of the basket. The basket is in accordance with DNV 2.7-1 and DNV 2.7-3. Hand calculations have been executed to verify the results from Ansys Classic. It is made machine drawing and rendering images from 3d - model program Solid Works. The basket is made out of rectangular and square hollow sections with regular structural steel, S355J2H. The primary structure has been dimensioned with a design load of 2.5, in accordance to DNV 2.7-1. Every corner of the frame are butt welded, the remaining joint are fillet welded with a throat thickness of 7 mm. The pad eyes are placed at ¼ and ¾ of the total length. The pad eye is supported by a steel plate with a thickness of 20 mm. The pad eye is welded to the plate by a double-bevel butt joint, to enhance fatigue. The basket has a tare weight about six ton`s.no_NO
