Eksisterende særlovgivning for
kommenteres.
i Bergen.
oppsummerende konklusjon. This master thesis addresses management and design of a burial type called named memorials in
Norway. Named memorials were first introduced in Norway in the beginning of the 1990’s. A named
memorial is in this thesis defined as: ”a type of burial offered in public cemeteries where the grave is
marked by a shared tombstone. Local legislations define whether urns or coffins, or a combination
of the two, is used in the memorials. The deceased’s name and date of death and birth is placed on
the shared tombstone. The location of the grave is known. Named memorials are maintained by the
employees. on the local cemeteries. Space to put candles and flowers is facilitated in the named
memorials.” In named memorials urns are most commonly used, but coffin burial also occurs.
In this thesis, the historical development of Norwegian burial customs is investigated to reflect on
what caused the creation of named memorials. Special legislation and laws regulate the creation
and management of named memorials, and their content is discussed. In June 2012 The Ministry
of Government Administration, Reform and Church Affairs (herinafter reffered to as FAD) published
a consultation paper regarding changes in the Norwegian funeral regulations (FAD 2012). The
chapters of this document that concerns named memorials is presented and the effect of the content
in this document is discussed.
As named memorials are a new burial type in Norway, there is a lack of literature about management
of named memorials; hence there was a need for gathering of data. A national Survey regarding the
expansion and management of named memorials in Norway, was and sent to all Norwegian church
wardens and nine project examples is presented.
Based on the gathered, a set of observations was created reflecting what contributes to the creation
of functional named memorials. Functional in this context is to manage and design named memorial
with respect for the primary function as a grave and mourning place for many people.
On the basis of the gathered data and observations, a solution for a functional design of a named
memorial is presented trough a specific case: the design of a named memorial on St. Jacob
cemetery, in Bergen. The cemetery was analyzed to detect what local considerations that had to be
taken in the design.
The case shows implementations of the results in the theoretical part of this thesis, in a design case,
and suggests solutions for management of the named memorial in form of a suggested addition to
the local cemetery statutes about named memorials.
The conclusion presents an argumentation for the solutions chosen, and explains how the research
problems presented in this thesis is solved.
