Sammendrag
Business processes are central to any organization, and the way they are executed has a direct impact on competitiveness. As digitalization has taken the business world by storm, new automation technologies promise to revolutionize business processes and deliver benefits in the form of efficiency gains, improved quality of service and increased productivity. Robotic process automation, or RPA for short, has emerged as an easy-to-implement and cost-efficient alternative to traditional process automation technologies. By interacting with the user interface of software applications and mimicking the behavior of human workers, RPA can perform repetitive and tedious tasks with speed and precision. Although the benefits of RPA have been well documented in the academic literature, RPA success depends on many factors, and the viability of any RPA initiative should be thoroughly analyzed before implementation. This thesis presents an RPA robot for an accounts payable process in a retail company, and a cost-benefit analysis is conducted to evaluate whether it should be implemented or not. We analyze the as-is process using process mining and construct the RPA robot from historical process data. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we estimate the impact of the proposed RPA implementation in terms of increased accuracy in the process. Our findings indicate that the benefits of the proposed RPA implementation outweigh its costs, and we conclude that the case company should implement the RPA robot.
