Produksjon av Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) og viktige utfordringer innen miljø, infeksjonssykdommer og genetikk
Abstract
Ekspansjonen av tilapiaindustrien har resultert i en rekke utfordringer som i dag begrenser produksjonen globalt. Tilapia er den mest utbredte oppdrettsfisken i verden samtidig som produksjonsformene er veldig varierte og kan tilpasses den enkelte oppdretters ressurser. Derfor finner man alt fra hageoppdrett til høyteknologisk, kommersiell tilapiaproduksjon rundt om i verden. I tillegg til å være en oppdrettsfisk som i all hovedsak forsyner interne markeder i utviklingsland har det også vokst fram et betydelig internasjonalt marked for tilapiaprodukter. De semi-intensive produksjonssystemene bidrar til 90% av all oppdrettet tilapia globalt og tilnærmet 82,6% produseres i ferskvann. Produksjonsforholdene preges derfor i stor grad av værforhold og viktige miljøutfordringer er oksygenmetning i vannet, riktig gjødsling, dammens dybde og utforming, ammoniakk- og nitrittkonsentrasjoner, pH, alkalinitet og vannturbiditet. Bakterier, virus, parasitter og soppliknende infeksjoner har blitt en større utfordring for produksjonen av Nile tilapia globalt. Økt biomasse, høyt smittepress, intensive produksjonsformer, stress, lengre transporter, mer håndtering, dårlig vannkvalitet og antibiotikaresistens er faktorer som øker mottakeligheten for infeksjoner.
Det er flere utfordringer innen produksjonen av tilapia, blant annet tidlig kjønnsmodning da dette medfører nedsatt og varierende vekst. Det finnes ulike genetiske metoder og moderne teknikker som kan brukes for å møte utfordringene. Imidlertid vil blant annet økonomi og tilgjengelighet på metodene påvirke om disse blir tatt i bruk. Dette gjelder særlig for de som produserer tilapia til eget eller lokalt konsum i utviklingsland.
