Abstract
This thesis consists of a theoretical part and the implementation of an experiment using in vitro gas measurement system. The literature section deals with the most important nutrients for the ruminant, as well as their degradation and methods for determination of digestibility. The thesis aims to investigate the potential of sawdust of birch as feed for ruminants.
If sawdust are to be used as feed for ruminants, the sawdust must be treated to increase digestibility. In this experiment, steam explosion, sodium hydroxide and ammonia have been used as treatment methods to see if these methods increase the availability of cellulose and hemicellulose, and thus increase the feed value of the sawdust.
The method used during the experiment is the ANKOM RF Gas Production System, which measures gas production in glass, continuously throughout the incubation. The amount of gas produced is used as a measure of digestibility.
The steam-exploded sawdust has significantly higher gas production than untreated sawdust, and chemical treatment of the steam-exploded sawdust seems to be of less importance. The dry matter lost from sawdust, that not have been exploded in steam was minor, which indicate low digestion.
These results should be considered as background for further work with sawdust as a feed for ruminants. Steam explosion of wood chips should be included in further studies with ruminants, over longer trial periods. In addition, various treatments should be tested as a full-scale experiment on rumen-fistulated cows.
