Abstract
i nasjonal samanhang.
The United Nations have declared the year 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity.
The intention is to focus on global biodiversity and to increase public awareness regarding the
importance of nature and biological diversity. Mapping of different types of nature is an
important contribution in the process of increasing public awareness as well as engagement of
the municipal authorities and its inhabitants.
Currently, the biggest threats to biological diversity in Norway are land-use changes,
including overgrown land. Vindafjord municipality contains a varied combination of nature
types, with a large amount of croplands, together with fjords and mountains. The municipality
is situated within the oceanic climate section (O2), which implies a moist and mild climate. In
the parts of Vindafjord that contain nutritious/lime-rich rock, there are several larger and
smaller entities of thermophilic deciduous forest. The thermophilic deciduous forest in
combination with the oceanic climate represents the basis for a high diversity in species, as
well as a combination of species that is unusual in Norway.
The current project focused on mapping important nature types that are found in the
municipality of Vindafjord, Rogaland County. The fieldwork was performed during the
summer of 2009, and 25 different areas where mapped. Of these, 4 areas were of value A
(very important), 15 were of value B (important) and 6 were of value C (locally important).
The two most valuable nature types found in Vindafjord are thermophilic deciduous forest,
and old pastures. Some of the most valuable areas in Vindafjord are Opsal and Kvaløy. These
two areas are very rich in number of species, and have several rare species, as well as redlisted
species that are rare.
Naturbase is the database where all professional mapping is registered. In addition to this
database, the new Naturtyper i Norge (NiN) database can be used by everybody. The most
important difference between Naturbase and NiN, is that the latter focuses more on local
differences in the ecosystem, climate and soil conditions. A relevant question is how these
two data bases can best be combined, avoiding both duplicate registrations, as well as loss of
registrations.
In the current project, a substantial challenge was to identify the outer boarders of each site, as
well as giving a conservation value. Several of the sites contained more than one nature type,
and these were difficult to categorize. Thus, the mapping of these sites was challenging, it was
also an interesting and useful experience.
