dc.description.abstractFar too many concept choices are done without a systematic and targeted evaluation and assessment of the various conceptual solutions for action. The focus of the objectives are often on the physical results and evidence, rather than the underlying goals of the project, which is to satisfy the primary user requirements to ensure the actual effect of a project. This thesis aims to present a conceptual product development process to evaluate the early stages of a project, focusing on concept choices and the understanding of the project scope in regards to overall needs, objectives and requirements. The overall theme of this thesis is project assessments in the early start phases. It has not yet been found previous research in a product development context, however some consideration has been payed to the quality assurance in major public investment projects through the Norwegian University of Science and Technology researchprogram, Concept. The data gathered for this study was obtained from internal stakeholders in Kongsberg Maritime Offshore (KMO), Pandora project documents and is largely based on literature series from the research program. The current thesis is based on KMOs development project, Pandora as a case study. A general description is given of the various tools and techniques that can be utilized to systemize available qualitative and quantitative data in the early phases of a project. The result section describes the process of the assessment and translates it into a practical coating based on Pandora. The results of this thesis is a model of decisions which includes a rational and a purposeful decision-making process between the various concepts in the development. The objective of the decision model presented in this study is to support the decision-makers who may have different preferences and requirements. In turn, this can with sufficient probability, present the concept with the «best fit» that meets the targets within the project limits. Furthermore, this thesis also includes an assessment of current methods and tool used in the early stages of a project. Due to the generalizability of this study, a definite conclusion cannot be drawn in regards to whether a conceptual process model is an effective tool in in the early stages of an assessment. The research design for a single case study does not permit it to be generalised due to the qualitative methods used. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to a new focus on the process flow in a development assessment, while the results can be transferred to similar project assessments. The method used can be relevant for development projects especially where multiple targets are to be achieved through the project and there are different preferences in regards to the evaluation of the concept.nb_NO
