Water damage on wooden structures may cause mold damage, poor indoor environment, and high payments from insurance companies. Recent research has shown that if water damage occurs, immediate measures should be taken to limit the damages. Nowadays more buildings are built in cross- laminated timber. This thesis was done in co-operation with Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology, with the intention of studying cross- laminated timber with respect to moisture, specializing in wetting and drying of cross- laminated timber. We studied how the moisture in the materials decreased after the wetting process. The drying of the materials was done in a laboratory with natural indoor climate conditions, that is, a constant temperature of 20 ℃ and relative air humidity of 40 %. The study also examines the wetting process of 15 cross- laminated timber samples. These samples were both floor and wall elements, measuring 30x30 cm with a thickness of 10 cm. The process of wetting the samples was done with a water level of approximately 2 cm, and over given time frames of 1, 3 and 7 days. HygroTrac sensors were set up to monitor each sample throughout the wetting process. A thermographic camera was used to localize where the humidity in the cross- laminated timber occured. After the wetting process, one of the wall samples was placed on a plastic cling film and dried along with the other samples. In comparison to a regular sample, the cling film proved to retard the drying process with approximately 77kg/m3 of moisture. This observation was done on a sample wetted for 7 days and dried for 24 days. The results yield that the wetting occurred fast, while the moisture content with regards to desiccation decreased fast in the start, but slowed down towards the end. The results indicates that 7 days of wetting the cross-laminated timber does not facilitate growing conditions for mold, due to the rapid drying in the beginning. The simulation program WUFI 2D was used to shed some light on the drying process over an extended period of time. The parameters in WUFI 2D simulation were based on the same input parameters of the laboratory, which consisted of; moisture content, time, indoor climate and temperature. The samples were simulated with and without using glue. The results from the simulations show that the materials have a higher drying rate compared to measured humidity as done in the practical part of the thesis. The simulation also reveals that the samples with glue had a higher drying rate in the beginning then the samples without glue. Because the results from the lab and computer simulation were different, we have to conclude that the simulation program WUFI 2D, may not be suitable to predict moisture development for cross- laminated timber.nb_NO
