The theme of this Master ́s thesis is quality systems effect on leaders motivation and commitment. Therefore, I have focused on the quality system Trygg I Vann’s effect on swim school managers in a variety of swim schools in the Oslo and Østfold area. Altogether, five different swimming schools participated in the thesis. The topic of this thesis is: "How to implement a quality management system in Norwegian swimming schools?" The topic is subsequently followed by four research questions: 1. How does swimming schools implement guidelines and Trygg i Vann, and how are they utilizing it today? 2. How do swimming schools define and measure quality? 3. How does the implementation of a quality system affect the quality of swimming lessons? 4. How does a quality system affect managers' motivation and commitment, and what effect has the motivation and commitment on implementation quality? The theoretical basis for this thesis is partly based on the theory of performance measurement from the private sector (Hoff and Holving, 2007; Kaplan and Nortman, 1992) and partly based on performance measurement taken from the voluntary sector (Sahwill and Williamson, 2001; Carns, Harris, Hutchison and Tricker, 2005). In addition, general theory of motivation (Gagne and Deci, 2005) and motivation theory related to volunteering (Clary et al., 1998), as well as theory on commitment (Allen and Meyer, 1996; O'Reilly and Chatman, 1986; Kelman, 1958) is emphasized. From this I have arrived at a link between quality system characteristics, motivation, commitment, and implementation quality. In addition, there will also be described a link between implementation quality to the quality of swimming lessons. The research design is a theory-driven case study and data collection is primarily qualitative, with some input of quantitative data. It was held semi-structured interviews of swim school managers, and it was brought in figures straight from Trygg i Vann. In addition I observed how most of the swimming schools organized their courses. 4 The result of this thesis was that it is possible to see a link between the quality management system's ability and motivation among the leaders. A higher degree of internal motivation among the leaders led to an internalized commitment process, which in turn led to high implementation quality. High degree of implementation quality also gave good results on the quality of swimming lessons.nb_NO
