In South Sudan, relentless conflicts, natural disasters and persistent poverty have had a detrimental effect on children’s mental and psychosocial wellbeing. However, researchers have found that some children manage well despite exposure to severe adversities. This study investigates local protective, promotive and risk factors for resilience within Maiwut county, South Sudan. A local research team conducted individual interviews, focus group discussions and a key informant interview with adult local school stakeholders. Five over-arching themes emerged through this research: personal strength, supportive relationships, basic needs, hope and peace. Protective and promotive resources were found on multiple socio-ecological levels, and respondents attributed the immediate environment as having the highest influence on a child’s resilience. This study highlights the importance of building on local support systems and sources of resilience, without excluding efforts to reduce risks of adversities. This knowledge can be used to design interventions aiming to promote resilience and mental wellbeing among children and adolescents.en_US
