Background: Road traffic noise is often associated with irritation, nuisance and other negative associations. A connection has been shown between road traffic noise and diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. The connection between road traffic noise and quality of life, well-being and subjective health complaints is more diffuse. Road traffic noise is a part of everyday life for many, and the total burden of being exposed to noise from road traffic noise over several years is an underestimated problem. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain more insight into how road traffic noise is experienced and how it affects the lives of those exposed to noise, as well as their use of housing and outdoor areas. In addition, the study has explored the use and development of coping strategies to deal with the exposure of noise from E18. This has been done through a public health perspective. Method: This study has used qualitative method with case study as study design and semi-structured interviews were used to collect empirical data. This has been done using the digital tool Teams due to covid-19. To analyze the data material, systematic text condensation was used. This led to three main themes, Health, Noise and Preventive measures. Results: Being exposed to noise from E18 was experienced negatively for the participants. Residents have been exposed to road traffic noise for several decades, but after the expansion of E18 in 2014, the noise has increased and posed grater challenges in dealing with the noise. The impact of road traffic noise has led to increased attention to the noise, irritation and a reduction in well-being by not being able to utilize the home and the outdoor area as desired. In addition, several have developed frustration with not being heard and seen by The Norwegian Public Roads Administration after E18 was completed. The total burden of being exposed to noise has resulted in reduced quality of life. The participants have developed several coping strategies that have had a positive effect on health and quality of life. In addition, access to a garden and green area nearby has been effective as a health-promoting and stress-reducing buffer. Conclusion: Road traffic noise from E18 can be seen as a stressor that has a negative impact on well- being, health and quality of life.en_US
