Byrom for ungdom i Jessheim

Abstract

Ungdom er fremtidens voksne, og siden Jessheim i dag har en ung befolkning i forhold til landsgjennomsnittet, er det viktig at satsingen skjer i retning av barn og unge. Ved å involvere og engasjere ungdom i den lokale stedsutviklingen, kan sosial bærekraft fremmes. Ved å se på ungdommens rolle i byutvikling og utfordringer knyttet til dette, undersøker denne masteroppgaven hvordan man kan skape grønne, interessante og inkluderende byrom for ungdom i Jessheim sentrum. Vi har gjennomført et medvirkningsprosjekt med lokal ungdom på Jessheim VGS, samt gjort egne analyser og registreringer av Jessheim. Gjennom å analysere ungdommenes innspill og Jessheim som helhet, kom vi frem til fem veiledende utformingsprinsipper for gode byrom. På bakgrunn av dette utarbeidet vi en mulighetsplan for sentrumsområdet. “Ungdomskvartalet” er et sammenhengende område i Jessheim sentrum med tilhørende fire byrom som reflekterer ungdommenes ønsker og behov. Dette mener vi vil generere byliv og fungere som et samlingspunkt for lokalsamfunnet, og særlig for ungdom. Byrommenes innhold, nærhet til andre viktige målpunkter, tilgjengelighet og estetiske kvaliteter sørger for at ungdommen har en sosial arena i sentrum. Utforming av byrom der ungdomsdeltakelse er sentral, kan ha synergisk effekt for deres livsmestring, medborgerskap og bærekraftig utvikling.

Youth are the adults of the future, and since Jessheim has a young population compared to the national average it is imperative that future development prioritizes younger generations. By involving and engaging youth in local development processes, social sustainability can be promoted. This master’s thesis explores the creation of green, interesting and inclusive urban spaces for youth in Jessheim’s city center by examining the roles youth hold in urban development and the challenges they face as part of these processes. The authors conducted a public participation project with local youth at Jessheim high school, as well as independent registrations and analyses of Jessheim. The analysis of input from the youth, and of Jessheim as a whole, were used to develop five guiding design principles for good urban spaces. These five principles form the basis for a feasibility study of Jessheim’s city center. «The youth block» is a cohesive area in Jessheim’s city center that includes four urban spaces which reflect the wishes and needs of the local youth. We argue that this design proposal will generate urban vitality and serve as a meeting place for the local community, especially the city’s youth. The programming, proximity to key destinations, accessibility and aesthetic qualities of the urban spaces ensure a social arena for local youth in the city center. Designing urban spaces centered around youth participation can also empower youth in their life mastery, citizenship and sustainable development.
