Handling deviance in CargoNet : a case study of business process management initiatives in CargoNet

Abstract

Improving processes is more important than ever for organizations that want to stay competitive. Improving processes has been common in some industries for a long time, like banking and telecom. Others, like CargoNet, have just started their BPM initiatives. This thesis aims to analyze success factors and challenges related to newly initiated Business Process Management projects at CargoNet. The theoretical framework includes the BPM Lifecycle, some concepts from the 7FE framework, critical success factors in BPM, and pitfalls many BPM initiatives fall into as described by BPM practitioners. The data collection method of choice was in-depth interviews with project participants and the commercial director in CargoNet. I also observed the project myself and gathered some information through document analysis. This case study was done through an explorative research method. The results from this case study were several success factors and challenges identified in the project. Some of the challenges may have had considerably more impact on the project than the success factors. The resource limitations and resulting inertia to phase in the new process seemed to be an important challenge. The thesis concludes with some advice for CargoNet going forward, how to face their challenges, and turning these challenges into success factors.

Forbedring av prosesser er viktigere enn noensinne for at bedrifter skal kunne være konkurransedyktige. Forbedring av prosesser har vært vanlig i industrier som bank og telekom. Andre har nettopp begynt deres initiativer, som CargoNet. Denne masteroppgaven søker å analysere suksessfaktorer og utfordringer til et nylig oppstartet Business Process Management prosjekt hos CargoNet. Det teoretiske rammeverket inkluderer BPM Lifecycle, noen konsepter fra rammeverket 7FE, kritiske suksessfaktorer i BPM og fallgruver i BPM initiativer beskrevet av BPM spesialister. Dette ble gjennomført ved hjelp av en eksplorativ studie. Datainnsamlingen og metodebruk var dybdeintervjuer med prosjektdeltagere og kommersiell direktør i CargoNet. Jeg observerte prosjektet selv, samtidig som jeg samlet inn informasjon fra dokumentanalyse. Resultatene var en rekke suksessfaktorer og utfordringer knyttet til prosjektet. Oppgaven konkluderer med noen råd fremover for CargoNet, hvordan de skal møte utfordringene deres og snu disse til suksessfaktorer.
