Background: This master thesis examines relations between walkability, meeting place access, participation in social activity and well-being in people’s local environment. Subjective well-being is an essential part of general health, and factors affecting well-being in the local environment, where people dwell and live their lives, has gained increased awareness. With loneliness being a public health challenge, facilitating social local environments is an important health promoting measure. Research from other countries demonstrates that different local environmental factors affect social activity and well-being, but we know less about this relationship in a Norwegian context. This implicates a need for more knowledge, to better understand how local environments can function as a health promoting arena. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study whether walkable surroundings and meeting place access is related to self-reported well-being in the local environment and participation in social activities among adults in three municipalities in the Norwegian county of Agder. Methodology: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study. The selection was gathered from a public health survey in Agder, and consists of inhabitants of Kristiansand, Grimstad and Arendal municipality. From this survey, the study uses information on well-being in the local environment and participation in social activity. Walkability and meeting place access were calculated using geographical information systems (GIS). These GIS-variables where then merged with the survey data in order to obtain objective information on the physical factors within each participant’s postcode area. The data was analyzed statistically using multinominal logistic regression. Main findings: The majority of participants from all three municipalities report high levels of wellbeing in their local environment. For inhabitants of Kristiansand, the results show a positive significant association between walkability and well-being in the local environment. The results for Kristiansand also show a positive significant association between meeting place access and participation in social activities. No clear associations were found for Grimstad and Arendal. Conclusion: This master thesis has contributed with knowledge on the relationship between walkability, meeting place access, well-being and participation in social activities in Kristiansand, Grimstad and Arendal municipality. Findings from the analyses show that walkability and meeting place access could be related to well-being and participation in social activities. However, longitudinal studies are needed to draw safe conclusions regarding these associations.en_US
