This retrospective study’s objective was to collect data on bacterial presence and their antibiotic susceptibility in dogs with keratomalacia by reviewing medical records from NMBU’s small animal hospital. 93 cases were included from 2012-2020; satisfying the inclusion criteria of a keratomalacia diagnosis combined with an antibacterial sensitivity profile result. 95 corneal swabs from 93 dogs with keratomalacia yielded 17 different bacterial genera as well as two swabs with unidentified mixed floras. 26 corneal culture results were negative (27.3 %). Among the 69 positive isolates, 36.2 % needed enrichment to grow, 15.9 % grew very sparsely, 8.7 % sparsely, while only 13.0 % grew abundantly and 5.8 % very abundantly after direct inoculation. The most commonly isolated organisms were Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (21.8 %), Streptococcus canis (17.2 %), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.3 %), Pasteurella sp. (8.0 %) and CoNS (8.0 %). Antibiotic susceptibility testing of 80 isolates, showed 52.5 % resistance to fusidic acid. Resistance to penicillin and polymyxin was 37.5 % each, while tetracycline-resistance was 17.5 %, chloramphenicol 10.0 % and gentamicin-resistance 3.8 %. No isolate showed oxacillin-resistance. 66.7 % of the study population were brachycephalic dogs. August was the single month accompanied by most patients, 17, diagnosed with keratomalacia.en_US
