Loneliness and social distancing are becoming an epidemic in many countries and in the largest cities in the world questions are being asked about whether we have designed our cities for loneliness. In the 2015 Living Conditions Survey from Norway 16% of the population reported feeling lonely sometimes, often or all the time. In 2018 the UK appointed their first Minister of Loneliness with the goal of working towards finding a solution to the challenge we are facing. Even though we move to the cities and are physically closer together, it seems as though we are more alone and feeling lonelier than ever before.en_US
Therefore, maintaining the city as a place where you can meet and interact with other people will become even more important in the future. The city should be a place where you want to be social and a place where you are not alone. So far, the planning sector has not been much involved with the work concerning how we can prevent loneliness. Therefore, we have yet to take many concrete measures in the physical environment to help with loneliness.en_US
dc.description.abstract“Sociability of public urban space” examines what physical, functional, and socio-cultural conditions may help make pro-social urban spaces and, in that way, help prevent loneliness. Based on document analysis and a literature study, the relevance of the theme is discussed and how from a landscape architect or planners view actions can be taken to increase the sociability of our public spaces.en_US
The result is an evaluation tool with 11 principles for sociability of public urban spaces. An evaluation of two public spaces in Drammen shows how the proposed principles can be used.en_US
Finally, the findings from the evaluation are used to suggest how the two public spaces can increase their sociability.en_US
