Since the first wastewater treatment plants were built in Norway in the 70’s, chemical treatment has dominated as the preferred method and to this day is still the most commonly used. One reason is the good effect it has on particles and phosphorus removal. This is important because phosphorus has a negative impact where the treated wastewater is let out and alongside this, we expect shortages of phosphorus in the future. Reduced use of chemicals will produce sludge with higher quality, which will be easier to reuse, i.e. as fertilizer in the agriculture. Phosphorus is essential for plant growth and is therefore an important asset in agriculture.en_US
