Hunting statistics and other sources of information indicate a dramatic decrease in the population of willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) in the mountains of Southern Norway over the past 140 years. Furthermore, there have been changes in the pattern of population dynamics between periods. During the years 1872 to 1900, populations varied between very high and very low densities. Around 1900, there were few willow ptarmigan over most of the mountains of Southern Norway, but the population increased rapidly to a level comparable to the previous peak years, and from 1905 to 1912 there was no years of particularly low numbers. Periodic peak levels decreased markedly after 1912. Between 1913 and WW II, population levels were particularly low around 1922 and 1939. Following a peak in numbers during the mid-1940s there was another depression towards the end of the decade, and generally few birds in the 1950s until the last major peak in 1966. There is a clear correlation between peak numbers of small rodents and willow ptarmigan, however, peaks in ptarmigan numbers have been lower during recent years. Overall, the data indicate a negative trend in population density of willow grouse over the last 100 years. The effects of hunting on population change are briefly discussed – a basic question is why populations after 1912 have not increased to the same high levels as they did previously following periodic crashes to low numbers.en_US
