The purpose of this thesis is to examine how stock returns of the 25 largest companies listed on Oslo Stock Exchange between 01.01.2010 - 31.08.2019 are affected by monthly oil price changes in general, whether there is asymmetry depending on whether changes in the oil price are positive or negative, how the companies’ stock returns are affected by particularly large oil price changes and if oil price changes affects the companies’ future stock returns. To examine this problem, various multi-factor models based on the capital asset pricing model are used. A two-factor model, who includes oil price return, and an extended model who includes monthly changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Producer Price Index (PPI) and the Trade Weighted Index (TWI) are used to investigate how general changes in oil prices affects the companies’ stock returns. A model who includes both positive and negative return as explanatory variables are used to investigate asymmetric effects on oil price changes, and a distributed lag model is used to investigate lagged effects.
