Background: Every year tourists arrive in Norway in the search of wild and beautiful nature. This increases the pressure on the already strained nature, and the result is an ever-increasing need for organization, maintenance and restauration. Some places the maintenance costs are higher than the funds available. The aim of this study is to map the willingness to pay amongst the tourists and estimate the value in order to assess the possibility of introducing a fee for those who visit the tourist attractions. Another aim is to investigate which factors influence the willingness to pay, and which purposes of the fee that matters for the willingness to pay. Method: Through contingent valuation method questions were asked regarding the willingness to pay for a fee for the use and maintenance at a hypothetical tourist attraction similar to Trolltunga. Double bounded dichotomous choice is estimated both parametric and non-parametric. The sociodemographic data along with one’s attitude towards environment and hiking were included in the survey. An exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis were employed. After this a parallel analysis were done. The goal was to reveal which purposes of the fee that would influence the willingness to pay. Operationalized dummy variables and factors from the factor analysis have been statistically analysed in R. Results: The mean willingness to pay were estimated to 13.60 € per person per day. The total expenditure for the trip, personal income and age were all positive significant factors when regarding willingness to pay. Those who were members of a hiking organization were less willing to pay. The factor analysis revealed that “security” were the most positive significant variable in the calculations. This variable includes safety patrols, emergency shelters and rescue services. Conclusion: This study finds that there is a willingness to pay amongst tourists and that several factors influence this willingness to pay. It would be interesting to do a pilot-test with a voluntary fee at Trolltunga and similar locations. More studies are needed at locations that differ from the hypothetical scenario presented in this study.nb_NO
