dc.description.abstractThe high rainfall area of Zambia -includes Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt, and North-Western Province of Zambia, approximately 370 000 km^2. Most soils in the area are highly weathered and strongly leached ferralsols. Some of the major agricultural constraints are low levels of available plant nutrients, low cation exchange capasity and weak retention of bases applied as fertilizers. In this report, a compilation of existing information on soils and seil fertility in the high rainfall areas of Zambia has been made. During the initial phase (phase 1) of the Soil Productivity Research Programme, an investigation of the nutrient status of cultivated soils in the area has been carried out, and the results are presented. Detailed experiments designs for field, frame and pot experiments were worked out, and a number of experiments were started during phase 1 concering soil fertility problems A comparison of soil analysis results obtained in the Soil Survey Unit laboratory, Mt. Makulu Central Research Station, Zambia, and the State Soil Investigation, Aas-NLH, Norway is also included in this reportnb_NO
