In this thesis we undertake a case study of residential satisfaction in two densification areas in Oslo, Pilestredet Park and Sjølyststranda, respectively. We explore the current relevance of some forgotten principles of human satisfaction in the living environment, theorised by the Danish environmental psychologist Ingrid Gehl. In 1971 she published the book ”Living Environment” (Bo-miljø) in which she proposes eight psychological needs, contact, isolation, experience, purpose/expression, play, structuration, identification and aesthetics. The research design is structured around these eight principles. The aim of the project is to explore how Ingrid Gehl’s psychological needs can contribute to nuancing the concept of residential satisfaction, and inform planning of densification areas in Oslo. There are two parts to this approach. Firstly, we propose a critical renewal of the eight psychological needs in light of current research and societal context. Secondly, we address which transferrable value Gehl’s work can have for current planning practice. There is a significant research gap on the lived experience of living in dense urban areas. For this reason we approach the topic from a user perspective. Of especial interest in how the residents of the two case study areas experience their living environments, what value and importance, if any, they attach to the eight psychological needs. We attempt to nuance the way we think about living quality, to encompass more than the technical, material qualities that impact upon how we experience place. With Gehl as a starting point, we turn our focus to the ‘soft’ and more abstract qualities. These are immaterial qualities that appeal to our emotions, are grounded in both place and experiences, and are felt through our senses. This responds to a recent call by Peters (2016) to study the social dimension of wellbeing and residential satisfaction. The results show that living quality is not reducible to Gehl’s eight categories, but that her theoretical foundation nevertheless presents a useful starting point to plan for soft qualities. We see a potential for her work to be used as a practical guidance for planners. The results from the fieldwork also illustrate there are other qualities that are more important in today’s society, especially that of location and centrality.nb_NO
