This master's thesis addresses issues related to micro-plastic analysis in samples with high content of organic matter. The digestate from large-scale biogas plants is used to produce bio fertilizer. The bio fertilizer is a nutritious fertilizer sought after in the agricultural industry. A portion of plastic materials introduced into the biogas plants ends up in the bio fertilizer part as micro-plastic. There is therefore a need for qualitative and quantitative determination of plastics in the bio fertilizer. The aim of the study was to test methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of microplate in organic waste. In the study, three methods of sampling preparation for microplastic analysis through chemical digestion were compared. The methods tested were: I) Resolution of organic material in a solution of NaOH:CO(NH2)2:CH4N2S, followed by wet oxidation with 33% H2O2. II) II) II) Resolution of organic material in a solution of 10M NaOH, followed by wet oxidation with 33% H2O2. III) III) III) Wet oxidation with 33% H2O2 added Fe(II)catalyst. A batch experiments was used to study how different stages of biogas production plants affect the plastic materials introduced into the plant as part of the biomass. The plastic material from the food waste bag used for the collection of food waste in the Oslo area was added to a biomass of synthetic food waste. The plaster was then examined for changes in physical structure and chemical signature after having undergone treatments similar to the biomass production process of a large-scale biogas plant. The microplastic analysis was performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and simultaneous thermal analysis with Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (STA / FTIR). In addition to the batch test, microplastic was analyzed in samples of solid and liquid biogas, from Lindum and Romerike biogas plants. The study has shown that it is possible to determine which plastics materials are present in a sample of substrate, digestate or biogas after chemical digestion, using the STA / FTIR analysis principle. The method of chemical digestion tested in this study proved suitable for concentrating the plastic materials from the complex sample matrix. Further development of chemical digestion method will be necessary to develop a standardized procedure for microplastic analysis in complex sample matrices, such as biogas. The study also shows that there is a need for a complete FTIR library, to accurately identify and then quantify the amount of plastic material in the sample material.nb_NO
