Soil samples from Holstad, Nygård and Vinterbro were analyzed to investigate pollution and proliferation of hazardous substances based on distance from the road, soil sampling depth and traffic situations (deceleration, acceleration and steady speed) for The Norwegian Public Roads Administration as part of the E18 Retvet-Vinterbro project. Normative values are defined for a number of substances, but there are no requirements to which methods should be used to determine these substances. A comparison of various methods for determining arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) was conducted to see if requirements for methodology should be clarified. The methods were analysis with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy after decomposition in autoclave with nitric acid at 120 °C for 30 minutes at ALS Laboratory Group Norway AS and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry at NMBU after decomposition at 260 °C for 30 minutes with HNO3 and the combination of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid both for the fraction <2 mm and fine-grained samples. Holstad, Nygård and Vinterbro generally consist of soils that don’t exceed the nominative values or background concentrations of the hazardous substances. None of the compounds exceeded state grade 3, the upper limit for masses accepted within industry and traffic area. A risk assessment should be carried out for some of the test sites that exceeded the nominative values and background concentrations for organic compounds where there were no defined state classes. Spreading of metals was investigated based on distance from road, test depth and traffic situation, but no contexts were detected. The analysis of the soil solution samples indicates that the metals are mainly bound to the soil. The comparison of the different methods showed that the selection of acid and temperature during decomposition could be of significance for the determination of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Zn, but it did’t matter if the fraction < 2 mm was further grinded before decomposition. This comparison was conducted for eight soil samples regardless of the requirements for accuracy. For the comparison of the method at ALS Laboratory and the method at NMBU which showed the best accuracy, the differences between the laboratories were small. It was not possible to provide a good comparison for As, Cd and Hg due to low concentrations and high measurement uncertainty, but the results for Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn matched well. The concentration of Cr in the soil samples determined by NMBU was significantly higher compared to the results at ALS Laboratory where temperature during decomposition can be a decisive factor. This shows that it would be interesting to look further into the use of different methods and that there should be requirements for the methods that can be used.nb_NO
